Description:

HTCPA is a digitized reference for food portions and containers. It includes a pictorial database of portion sizes for the 300 most commonly consumed foods in the US and commonly used containers. At least 2 sizes or amounts were photographed for each food or container under highly controlled camera settings. In addition to these portion sizes, a photograph of a typical USDA pyramid serving size for selected foods in each of the five food groups is available for display in the program. Applications:

With an easily searchable visual interface of scaled photographs to be used as anchors for portion size estimation, the program can be used for education, dietary assessment, and research. Portion Counts is the clinical version for use in weight management, diet management in diabetes, or meal planning for heart healthy meals. Portion Counts allows the user to view the calories, carbohydrates, protein, fat, cholesterol and fiber content of each food photograph displayed. It serves not only as a counseling tool but also as knowledge reinforcement when the software is on the patient or client's computer. Above is a sample screen that compares the weight and nutrients for 2 sizes of cinnamon bun.
