  Portion Sizing

6-8 20-22 fl oz cup 64-67 fl oz cup

Ballooning portion sizes contribute to the problem of overweight and obesity in the US and elsewhere. This public health problem calls for creative strategies that link the experts' reference (or standard) for communicating food sizes and amounts, and the public’s perception of such measures.

HTI Portion Software Tools provide this link. This visually engaging suite of software is designed for use in the classroom, in the clinic, or at home, and is great for:

  • Patient/client education on portion control
  • Portion documentation during dietary assessment
  • Teaching USDA Food Guide Pyramid serving sizes

HTI Portion Software Tools consist of three separate, self-supporting software applications:

Portion Basics Screenshot Portion Basics makes people aware that size matters, that container sizes have grown from a 6-8 fluid oz “dixie cup” to a 64-67 fluid oz “super cup”.

Portion Counts alerts people that calories also count and that a pyramid serving size of salmon steak is a healthier choice than a restaurant serving of a pound of beef steak.Portion Counts Screenshot

Portion Plus ScreenshotPortion Plus is the researcher’s tool to collect data on how people perceive sizes and amounts of food they eat; and the educator’s tool to teach ways of enabling portion control.
